Interview with Tiza Mukuka, founder at Brandboy, a social Media agency based in Lusaka.
For those who don’t know you, tell us a little about yourself, and what you do?
My full names are Tiza Mukuka, born and bred in Lusaka Zambia. I do digital marketing using social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. I have my own social media agency called BrandBoy Media, which helps local businesses meet their clients through social media platforms.
What problem are you solving in your community, in your country or in Africa?
Unlike TV or print advertising, digital marketing allows truly personalized marketing that focuses on a targeted audience is reached in a cost effective and measurable way.
Facebook is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, with more than 1.6 billion users. And people like to spend a lot of time on it, whether all at once or periodically throughout the day. This means there are billions and billions of eyes constantly scrolling through posts, videos, photos, status updates, and, yes, advertisements.
And when it comes to advertising, there is no company in the world that has more information about its users than Facebook. It includes much more than just your age, gender, and alma mater. While those things are valuable for marketing purposes, Facebook also knows which websites you visit and how often, how much time you spend doing various things online, and what you purchase. From a business marketing standpoint, that stuff is gold. And thankfully it’s right there for the taking, if you know where to find it and how to use it. That’s where BRANDBOY MEDIA comes into play.
Do you think this is the right time for your start-up to solve the problem?
Facebook is now mostly used by billions of people every day so this is right time for me to help local businesses in my community market their brand to many Facebook users who check through Facebook every day and turn them into potential walking in clients.
Does your solution fit in the market? (Do people want it)?
Our solution does fit in the market and people need it because technology has now improved. Everything is now digital, instead of placing adverts in a newspaper which only a certain age group is interested in, it’s better to place them on social media platforms where every age group is interested in.
Tell us more about your team, why are you the best to solve this problem?
I have a very creative, hardworking and engaged team by my side. Each one understands what needs to get done and trusts the judgement of each one. We possess a combination of skills and experience which makes us stand out from others who are in the same business. We do the work and make sure we deliver exceptional results so working with us makes your business smarter and makes your life easier.
What makes you different in the market?
What we do at BrandBoy Media is unique. Most other social media agencies write flowery words and make pretty pictures for print and web use. We are different! First, one of our aim of operation is to help before anything else. Have a question? We will get you the answer. Need an opinion, a trouble-shoot, a piece of knowledge? We will help you and then we can talk business.
How innovative is your start-up? (In terms of Technological/Social innovation)
We are compact and bright team of marketing professionals, with an emphasis on social media campaigns. For the past year, we’ve helped startups, mom-and-pop shops, and big corporations realize the potential in Facebook marketing to grow a customer base, retain those customers, and bring new ones on board.
How are you scaling up the start-up?
I try to set goals that meet or beat expectations, and work as hard as I can to complete those goals, if I can make mistakes along the way, then I know I can improve and still have work to do, but if I reach those goals and achieve my desired my outcome, I consider that a success.
I position myself as a partner. Big businesses are often too slow to react to new technology and other innovations. Example eBay and amazon have suffered from complaints over people allegedly posting fake reviews to bring down their ratings. But some well-known brands are increasingly working with smaller partners to compensate for these kinds of failings.
Seeking more funding, building the brand through growth hack and doing more training and mentorship.
What advice do you leave for budding entrepreneurs and new start-ups?
Stay positive. Don’t let bad days bring you down. Make conscious choice to maintain a positive attitude. When you don’t allow negative thoughts to creep in, you can keep a positive outlook even in the face of the biggest challenges. Surround yourself with like-minded people who inspire you, you will realize the positivity to foster, you will realize the potential that lies within you.
