Interview with Victoria Dede Teye, CEO at Naadede Makeup Artistry/Hairstylist/Nail groomer, based in Ghana, Kumasi.

For those who don’t know you, tell us in a few words: who is Naadede and what is makeup artistry?

I am popularly known as Naadede, 24 years old, born and bred in Ghana; Kumasi to be precise. First of all, I would like to say I am a proud Akyeame of Jachie-Pramso Senior High School, Kumasi, on the Lake Bosomtwe road. I must say although the school is not ranked as one of the best schools in Ghana but it has really made me who I am now hence I acknowledge it.

I had my first degree in Bsc. Biological Science. I gathered up my passion in 2012 where I had so much interest in dressing colleagues’ hair and making them up for lectures and other events. I carried out functions linked to makeup artistry, hairstyling and a nail grooming as a visual learner through social media and frequently visiting the salon to learn other techniques from different salons.

Makeup Artistry/ Hairstyling / Nail sculpturing is a beauty platform aimed at enhancing natural beauty with the skin, hair, and nails.

What problem are you solving in Africa, in your country or community?

I pour my heart and soul into creating innovative problem solving products that truly give both females and sometimes males, their most flawless skin ever. With skin that has lost its strength to glow, these products we use will make you look and feel you are most beautiful by concealing blemishes, oil face and acne to enhance the natural beauty of all females and sometimes males. That’s why I live and breathe.
It is also very necessary to educate young people and the aged about the right beauty products which can help them get a flawless skin. There are different kinds of skin (dry skin and oily skin), which people are sometimes ignorant about and so use any product on their faces without any research to find out if they are really good for their faces and skin before using so as to not bring forth any future skin diseases.

Do you think this is the right time for your start up to solve the problem?

Oh yes! This is the right and exact time to work on this problem. We must all look for better solutions and direct ways help curb skin problems or diseases to facilitate the beauty industry business. Only then we would be able to build healthy skin.

Does your solution fit in the market? (Do people want it)?

It has been well accepted worldwide where everyone wants to have a beauty enhanced and it is growing and influencing other young people worldwide to have this a source of employment.

Tell us more about your team, why are you the best to solve this problem?

As for now I work with few partners like photographers, Naadede Makeup Artistry / Hairstyling / Nail sculpturing has emerged the required experience of this project which is previous experience of services, have exceeded most difficulties in the area of management to create services that would help interested people to gain more knowledge about beauty in all sort of makeup (bridal makeup, special FX makeup, event makeup, editorial makeup, stage play makeup), all kinds of Hairstyling and nail sculpturing.

What makes you different to the market?

Originality: we believe in originality in our makeup products. This is easier said than done, of course, but it’s a necessary step if you don’t want to blend in with other competitors.
Sincerity: We demonstrate a degree of sincerity. If you respond to all your customers on social media with the same copied and pasted corporate response, people are going to see you as a soulless machine that cares only about turning a profit. Instead, show your human side (kind, respect, etc).
Understanding: We understand our clients by are the ones that understand their target audiences.
Boldness: The boldest brands are not afraid to experiment with new techniques, or take a stance on controversial issues within the industry.
Consistency: The goal is to get your followers and readers to stick around as long as possible; but to do that, you need to give them a sense of familiarity and predictability. The best way to secure those qualities is to lock down your brand standards early on, and ensure that all team members working on your campaigns are skilled at their execution.
Visibility: The only way to build your reputation from scratch is to make your brand as visible as possible.
Value: We simply offer better products and services.

How do you measure your success?

We get feedbacks from our clients and their referrals to us. Also we do measure the involvement by people on our social platforms.

How innovative is your start up?

We provide products in an easier and more accessible way which allows everyone to have access to without moving from their homes and also at a moderate cost.
How are you scaling up the start up?
Our main objective is to be recognized as an indispensable, reliable and a comfortable tool for everyone.
In the long run, we plan to lead the makeup/hairstyling/nail sculpturing business worldwide.

What challenges have you faced so far?

1. The challenges faced so far as with some clients. You picture the person’s face knowing these are the colours that would fit her face but they end up giving out instructions as to what they want which may not be the best match for her.

2. To get to the top where you’d be known, most people look out for makeup artistes who have had a touch on a renowned person example an actress, etc where they also tend to put their trust in you for patronising your services. It’s all about meeting the right people who can connect you to the world.

3. Sometimes in some cases most clients don’t accept certain charges from your services cos they believe you’ve not gotten to the top where they expect you to be.
Lastly, we see now everyone wants to enter the makeup artistry where no particular order or procedure is accepted to reduce the number so some clients don’t respect you when you work on them because they believe excuse my word, people who don’t have understanding about this profession are doing making  it difficult for the professionals.
What advice do you have for budding makeup artists, hairstyling and nail groomers?
Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Leadership is not about a title or a designation. My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style, just develop a passion for learning.
Lastly, passion is an emotion that comes from within you. It is your enthusiasm, your zeal, your drive and your motivation. Apply all your skills and all your energy into your work.
Thank you!!!
